Terminal Fun – cygwin / rxvt / vim

Possibly its because i’ve never sat down to learn it but the cmd prompt in windows is totally and utterly crap!!!

The only thing that makes windows more bearable is cygwin combined with rxvt to make it look pretty.

i was having some problems with getting vim working but found this little fix:

All you need to do is modify your .vimrc file.
Copy the example .vimrc file from /usr/share/vim/vim62/vimrc_example.vim to ~/.vimrc then open vi and its fixed :)

Enjoy

BT – Idiots “R” Us

I don’t usually blog stuff of a personal nature, i tend to prefer links and what not :D

Having to made the jump from a 4MB line in Oxford to a 2MB line back home was driving me insane so I phoned the nice people at BT to see about an upgrade. The sales people informed me that for £5 less i could get “up to 8MB broadband” so why have BT been charging me over the standard rate for god knows how long? Anyway onto the problem!

So i went ahead and ordered the 8MB (4th Aug) and was informed of a 7 day wait for the service to be enabled, its only a speed increase not a new activation! So 7 days later the service was active and my speed plummeted to 1MB strange i though so gave it a day as theres a 10 Days optimisation period the next day the speed was still 1MB so i phoned the technical support people (in India!) and was told that as the optimisation period was still in play there was nothing they could do and the phone was put down on me! Another 4 days later and my speed had never gone over 1MB again on the phone to India where again I was told that “blah optimisation blah phone back later blah”. Day 11 after activation speed is still at 1MB! Phoned India AGAIN and the chap at the other end made an interesting discovery, it seems I was on option 1 Broadband! He then started ranting how did i expect to get 8MB when I was paying for 1MB it took a lot of my patience and explaining that i had ordered 8 to get through to him!

A call to the sales team confirmed that i was option 1 (although i had received a letter from BT stating i was option 3) the girl apologised for the error and would move me to option 3 ASAP buttttttttttttt there’s a 7day wait followed by another 10 days optimisation!

Lets do some sums!

Ordered on : 4 August
Active on : 13th August (9 days)
Optimisation end: 23 August (19 Days)
New Active on : 30 August (26 Days)
Optimistaion End: 9 September (36 Days)

So that’s 36 days to upgrade from a 2MB to 8MB line, bravo BT!
