I’m trying to get away from wireless at the minute as transfering large files is a pain and takes forever and a day. My plan is to have all my main devices (server, desktops, xbox etc) connected via cat5 and leave the wireless for laptops and iPhones.
The big problem was getting a network connection into my study, we’ve moved into a new house and Rebecca wasn’t too fussed about me ripping the place appart. When I wanted to play on xbox live I had to run a 20meter blue cable through the livingroom and up the stairs!!
I decided to give the devolo power over Ethernet a shot. The kit comes with 2 “plugs” and 2 network cables. It’s a simple case of plugging one in beside the router and connecting the Ethernet cable and then plugging the other in where you need it, that’s it! With a little configuration you can set up encryption AES I think but I havn’t bothered as of yet. The speeds seem quite good and they’re rated at 200Mb/s.
Next on the list is a small switch so that I can share the Internet with the devices in the study.
